Our story is woven with the narratives of our parents, Rich and Maggie Corthell, who modeled  servant leadership through their Peace Corps service, foster parenting, mission trips, and extensive volunteering. Raised with the values of authenticity, curiosity, and making a positive impact, we both pursued careers in the helping professions: Kimere as a mental health and school counselor, and Katie in social services and recreational therapy.

Our diverse professional backgrounds encompass work in various sectors, from schools to prisons, and with diverse populations spanning age, ability, and ethnicity. Throughout these experiences, we encountered systemic barriers in education, mental health, healthcare, and access to opportunities, fueling our aspiration to establish a nonprofit.

The sudden loss of our father in 2019 propelled us to turn this dream into reality, leading us to found Mind the Gap Together, Inc. in 2021. Committed to dismantling barriers in education, career, housing, healthcare, and counseling, we embarked on this journey to transform our pain into purpose.

What we've been working on

We are very grateful to have met and been introduced to some wonderful and influential individuals in St. Petersburg since starting this journey. Without these connections, we would not be where we are today! We have been able to expand our knowledge of resources and other nonprofits in our area that are also working diligently to meet the needs in our community.

We received a private donation for start-up costs in 2023 and recently applied for our first grant and have been funded for our first project! Our funding was granted by Foundation for Healthy St. Pete who has partnered with Bayfront Health to distribute almost 5 million dollars to local nonprofits working to remove barriers and address health inequities. There were 126 applications submitted and only 31 projects were funded! This was a sign we are moving in the right direction and our goal of the nonprofit being our full time job seems more realistic everyday.

“ Use the love. Carry them with you in all that you do, using their love as the source.”

PLANS
FOR
THE
FUTURE

The A.S.A.P. (Additional Support and Programming) Project goals are related to continuing to build capacity by establishing a home office space, updating our website, increasing our social media presence, establishing fundraising campaigns, establishing official community partnerships, and providing high quality, affordable mental health and case management services.

We will continue to seek grant assistance and funding to have a positive impact on our community.
